Preventative dentistry is the practice of caring for your teeth to keep them healthy. By taking proper care of your teeth you can avoid cavities, gum disease, enamel wear, and more. There are many different forms of preventative dentistry, such as daily brushing and dental cleanings. In order to maintain optimal oral health the American Dental Association recommends regular visits to the dentist.
At our office we can provide our patients with fluoride treatment and cleaning, digital X-rays, and professional hygiene assistance. We also offer non-surgical periodontal treatment.
Here are some tips for dental care:
-
Brush daily. Daily brushing with flouride toothpaste approved by the American Dental Association is one of the most important parts of preventative dentistry. Most people should replace their toothbrushes three to four times a year, as the bristles begin to fray.
Additionally, remember to brush your tongue. This removes bactertia from the mouth, and freshens your breath.
-
Floss daily. Flossing is recommended, as it helps clean out the spaces between your teeth. If you have braces you may need floss threaders to get between them.
-
Visit the dentist. You should see a dentist at least once a year to check for any teeth or gum problems. If you are at a high risk for dental problems you will likely benefit from more frequent dental visits. It you are at low risk for problems, you may see the same benefits from only a cleaning per year. Cleanings and exams allow problems to be identified and handled early.
-
Eat a balanced diet. A good diet helps protect your teeth by supplying them with the nutrients they need. Limit your sugar intake, including simple carbohydrates like white bread, and drink plenty of water through the day.
Vitamins are also an important part of oral health. A varied diet will help you get all of the vitamins you need to maintain your oral health.
